02/16/2003

Bowling was definitely a college pastime. I think this was one of the first times we went, and also one of the most memorable. Our class went with then freshmen Lori, Abe, Amanda, Fred, and Danny, and we lost both times. We also ran into P. Eug and the c/o 2003 officers after their meeting. And this is us doing our punishment in front of everyone. This was back when punishments were still relatively harmless and innocent.

02/17/2003

This was a class bbq but it was during a long weekend so a lot of people couldn't make it. I remember helping Nancy make her famous ribs and I remember how the bones scratching my hands hurt like ass. But 주무르-ing the meat was freakin fun. I also remember Roy's heart-shaped cake that everyone gave him crap about and the guys sliding down a hill with a piece of cardboard they randomly found.

Much happened in February, 2003.

Continuing with Birthdays...

Taken at Jillian's in SF for Esther's Birthday. I don't remember much except that the club was pretty dead that night with a much older crowd. I was also a self-proclaimed honorary Piedmontian.

Remember Jillian's after senior banquet? Um, yeah, that was gross. The party after at Janet and Anica's place was fun though.

Taken at Chevy's in Emeryville as evidenced by their signature tacky sombreros, this was taken one summer for Snoh and Judy's joint birthday dinner. A lot of us were up there that summer. Celebrations at Chevy's... definitely a college memory. I remember once for Kristy's birthday we got her drunkety drunk off a behemoth margarita. Hooray for chicken flautas, endless chips and salsa, and endless tortillas sprinkled with brown sugar.

Taken at PF Chang's for Linda's birthday celebration, I think this was the birthday we pitched in and got her a camera or something related to a camera. After this experience, I realized that PF Chang's is nothing more than overpriced Chinese food for white people.

Anyway, I like this picture a lot. And not just because I'm in the center of the picture.

Taken at Fisherman's Wharf in SF, this was after we had eaten at Bubba Gump's for Sharon's birthday. We decided to be cool and blindfold Sharon... I don't know why. And even though she was blindfolded, she didn't falter a single bit, thanks to our expert guiding. I, however, fell down extremely hard on both knees and hands, and in my embarrassed haste, proceeded to knock down a nearby child.

I also remember calling Roy in the middle of dinner to ask a question about Forrest Gump so that we (Sharon) could get a free dessert. Yes, I am a cheater and a heiferous glutton. Anyway, it worked. But the dessert wasn't even that good. It was a hollow victory.

Karen took this picture and was very proud of how it turned out. It's a nice picture.

Monday, May 15, 2006

I've been meaning to do this for a while, but excuse my laziness [laciness]. I originally submitted these pictures for the senior banquet slideshow, but they never made it because the guy in charge apparently became too lazy to browse through all the submitted pictures and only used pictures from the first few people. Hence, the reason why the same people kept showing up throughout the slideshow. Anyway, seeing the younger class this past weekend, finishing finals and getting ready for graduations, made me feel a bit nostalgic. How has it already been two years since we've graduated?

These pictures are literally all I have to remember college by. I hope they bring as many fond memories as they do for me. =]

Taken during sophomore retreat, this was the Americana girls picture, of which I was an honorary member for frequenting the place so often while I lived at 2329½ Dwight Way.

I'll never forget Sewon and Kristy having to trek across the street every Friday to wake my sleeping ass in time for FicB. Apparently, I'm quite the temperamental monster when awoken from a deep slumber. I completely disagree. Why Kristy is wearing those Hello Kitty earmuffs, I do not know.

Taken either our sophomore or junior year, this is a picture of our class girls who watched The Beauty and The Beast musical in SF. The roses in my hand were thrust to me by a nearby vendor right before we took the picture and taken away immediately after.

I'll never forget the scene when the Beast is supposed to change into a human after Belle kisses him and admits she loves him while he breathes his last breath. The Beast was lifted into the air, began to rotate, and then froze as he was horizontally suspended in the air. The suspenseful music began to crescendo, but the Beast remained motionless. Then suddenly, a voice announced, "We are experiencing technical difficulties. We apologize for the inconvenience." The curtains closed and the lights came on. Five minutes later, the lights turned off, the curtains opened, triumphant music commenced, and lo and behold, there was the Prince, smiling beatifically at an astonished Belle. There was certainly not much magic felt after that.

Taken during the first EM retreat, I don't remember much except the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon skit where the parents made their babies fly. That was when I was first introduced to Hayley and Nicole. I wonder how they're doing now. And Heidi, my husky little protégé who'll never remember me.

Taken at Sisters' Appreciation, it's weird to see how we've changed over the years, but at the same time, haven't really. I also think Jane shouldn't have been carrying Linda's torso and that Sharon or I should have been instead.

I'll never forget how incredibly uncomfortable and out of place I felt throughout the breakfast.

Also taken at Sisters' Appreciation, these were the girls in my sophomore small group.

I'll never forget Sarah disclosing her random obsession with chapstick. I'm so glad she was my small group leader. Three of the four of us would be in the same small group again the following year.

Taken during POTCH our sophomore year, I always thought our class came up with creative and ingenious skit ideas. This was no exception.

I'll never forget the chills I felt every time I saw this scene. I'll also never forget being Kristy's voice-over. That was fun.

Taken during POTCH our junior year, Judy's Moulin Rouge idea initially seemed a bit complicated, but the result was very successfully delivered. It was fun watching Carroll yank and swing Sewon around like a limp rag doll.

I'll never forget Karen pairing Kristy and Kwansoo together because she thought he was too short to be her partner, nor how I felt when I discovered it was Andy Chon who had plugged the extension cord through the chair I was supposed to use during the puppet scene.

Sunday, April 23, 2006

In a brief conversation, a man asked a woman he was pursuing the question, "What kind of man are you looking for?"

She sat quietly for a moment before looking him in the eye and asking, "Do you really want to know?"

Reluctantly, he said "Yes."

She began to expound...

"As a woman in this day and age, I am in a position to ask a man what he can do for me that I can't do for myself. I pay my own bills. I take care of my household without the help of any man... or woman for that matter. I am in the position to ask 'What can you bring to the table?'"

The man looked at her. Clearly he thought that she was referring to money. She quickly corrected his thought and stated, "I am not referring to money. I need something more. I need a man who is striving for perfection in every aspect of life."

He sat back in his chair, folded his arms, and asked her to explain.

She said, "I am looking for someone who is striving for perfection mentally because I need conversation and mental stimulation. I don't need a simple minded man.

I am looking for someone who is striving for perfection spiritually because I don't need to be unequally yoked... believers mixed with unbelievers is a recipe for disaster.

I need a man who is striving for perfection financially because I don't need a financial burden.

I am looking for someone who is sensitive enough to understand what I go through as a woman but strong enough to keep me grounded.

I am looking for someone who I can respect. In order to be submissive, I must respect him. I cannot be submissive to a man who isn't taking care of his business. I have no problem being submissive...he just has to be worthy.

God made woman to be a help mate for man. I can't help a man if he can't help himself."

When she finished her spiel, she looked at him. He sat there with a puzzled look on his face. He said "You are asking a lot."

She replied "I'm worth a lot."

In 2005, Compton's homicide rate increased by more than 70% from 2004, with 72 murders committed, all within a tiny 8 square mile area. That's more than one homicide committed per week. In 2006 alone, there have been 16 homicides reported, again more than one being committed a week.

When considering working with rape cases where a 16 year old girl was found with at least six different guys' seminal fluids within her or cases where a mother put her 3 month old baby in the washing machine and then set the house on fire, hardcore gang homicides suddenly seem a bit easier to swallow.

Ten reasons why Bakersfield makes me happy:

1. Watching Chronicles of Narnia for 50 cents.
2. Fresh Choice.
3. Having the room upgraded to the penthouse suite so I had a king bed to myself. With six pillows.
4. Freshly made waffles with a light sprinkling of powdered sugar.
5. Everything being in such close proximity.
6. Cheaper tax.
7. 두레 마을.
8. Thunderstorms.
9. Having the fitness room to myself.

The week in review:

-I finally realized on Wednesday that my calendar had incorrectly printed the dates of Good Friday and Easter. Good Friday was not yesterday, the 24th, and Easter Sunday is not on the 26th. It's the feeling that occurs right after your ears *pop* after being plugged all day long. Except in my case, it was for the past two months. I feel like something like this would only happen to me.

-I'm prohibited from returning to my internship for the next two weeks because I was caught working before I was cleared of the mandatory government security background check. It's the first time anyone's been caught in the past six years. Again, I feel like this is something that would only happen to me.

-I witnessed my first criminal trial. The defendant was found guilty on all counts charged and was sentenced to life without parole and an additional 90 years. I realized that I do not wish to ever become a defense attorney. Or, more specifically, be one against the DAs of the Hardcore Gang Unit. I also heard more profanity this past week than I've heard altogether since I returned from Europe in January 2005.

-It was my 외할머니's 85th birthday on Thursday. My 외할머니 is one of the most important people in my life. I wrote about how much of an inspiration she is to me for my undergrad college application essay, but freakin Mr. Raabe told me not to submit it. One reason why I wanted to get married asap and pop out five children in near consecutive order was so that they would all have the opportunity to experience what an amazing, generous, and beautiful person she is.

-I finally saw a picture of the esoteric Cisco and was pleasantly surprised. Hurrah for dimples and spaghetti. Boo for shortness and finickiness with food.

3. Scrapbooks.
4. Make face lighter or rest of body darker.
5. Resign myself to the idea of sweating. [Hence working out until I sweat, rather than working out until the point I'm about to sweat.]
6. Make one pot of 된장찌개 after 4+ years of Sewon trying to teach me.
7. Become a book whore.
8. Eat breakfast on a continuous basis.
9. Wake up in time to eat breakfast on a continuous basis.
10. Learn to type properly... or enough to not look at fingers while typing.
11. Visit 할머니들 more often.
12. Drink more milk because I really really need to grow two more inches.
13. Travel out of California.
14. Less procrastination.
15. Respond to emails and voicemails in a timely manner. Pick up phone calls.

The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups of Coffee

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a
day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of
him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty
mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the
students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar.
He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the
golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They
agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of
course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar
was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and
poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space
between the sand. The students laughed. "Now," said the professor as the
laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your
life. The golf balls are the important things---God, your family, your
children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if
everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be
full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your
house and your car.

The sand is everything else---the small stuff. "If you put the sand into
the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf
balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the
small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to
you.

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with
your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to
dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and
fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really
matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee
represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show
you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a
couple of cups of coffee with a friend."
